In the complex world of semiconductors, in addition to chip manufacturers and fabless companies, you can identify the so-called IP provider, or providers of Intellectual Property. These generals are selling solutions and technologies that are then integrated in products from one or more companies. An excellent example is the provider of IP ARM, a British company has become a worldwide leader in embedded processors. Today most of phones, smartphones and PDAs in the world include at least one integrated ARM processor in their system-on-Chip, which is the brain of the system where almost all the features are implemented. Another example of an IP provider that is worth mentioning is the Denali, a company that has experienced tremendous growth in few years. This has started selling models of software components hardware (known as DDR) with the goal of allowing developers to perform system-level simulations.
In such a scenario there are really many opportunities to develop ideas and turn them into business without having to raise huge amounts of capital. In fact, many IP providers that are now in the world are born from simple spin-offs. Of course, in Italy is that politics and institutions are not aware of what's happening in the world and provide the necessary tools so that all those who have the will and ideas, to prove they are able to do so. There is need for such initiatives are encouraged in Italy, through instruments such as spin-offs, loans, etc.. Even if only a small percentage of the initiatives were successful would be a major achievement for the country. I am personally convinced that the brains Italian are truly among the best in the world today and if our country is lagging behind other is just because you have not done enough to encourage those who have the potential to make a difference.
